Renowned P’ansori Masters and Virtuoso Singers

Introduction The goal of this course is to provide an overview of the lives and artistic perspectives of notable p’ansori singers, critics, and supporters. This will allow for a comprehensive understanding of the aesthetics and historical importance of p’ansori. Additionally, this course will ofer insight into the current transmission of contemporary p’ansori, not just traditional p’ansori, in the 20th and 21st centuries.

 

The Greatest Prose Writers of the Chosŏn Dynasty

Introduction This course aims to provide an overview of sinographic prose works written by prominent writers of the Chosŏn Dynasty. It offers the opportunity to appreciate and understand the thoughts and emotions of pre-modern Koreans through their sinographic prose, drawing upon recent research achievements. To make the course accessible to students who are not fluent in sinographic works, the prose pieces are presented using modern Korean language translations.

 

The Modern Grammarians of Korea

Introduction The aim of this course is to examine the research outcomes of modern grammarians such as Chu Si-gyŏng, Kim Tu-bong, and Kim Kyu-sik, and to understand the spirit of the era in which they lived. The course will provide a theoretical understanding of the results contained in contemporary Korean language research, and allow students to gain insight into the consciousness and spirit of Koreans, as well as the development of the modern academic system of Korean linguistics through an understanding of the lineage of modern linguists.

 

Calligraphers and Painters of the Chosŏn Dynasty(1392~1910)

The course will focus on prominent calligraphers and painters from the Chosŏn Dynasty, exploring their lives and works in order to understand their unique characteristics and perspectives on tradition and the present.

Introduction The objective of this course is to gain an understanding of the trends and flow of contemporary Korean poetry through the lens of “Feminist Women’s Poetry in Korea.” To achieve this, the course will critically analyze the poems written by Kim Hye-soon, Choi Seung-ja, Heo Soo-kyung from the 1980s, Choi Jeong-rye, Lee Yeon-joo from the 1990s, and Kim Min-jeong, Kim Yi-deum, Hwang Seong-hee, Lee Hye-mi, and Jung Han-ah from the 2000s, focusing on their aesthetics and structural principles.

The Creators of the Korean Writing Systems and the History of Written Korean

Introduction The purpose of this course is to examine the historical evolution of the written Korean language. While it is commonly recognized that the script used to write Korean is Han’gul, it is less widely known that Han’gul was only used for about one-third of the 1,500-year span in which Korean was written. This course reflects the latest research achievements in the field and delves into topics such as the use of “idu” and “kugyŏl” and the transformation of Han’gul writing after its creation.
