Description of Key Roles and Activities

  • Production and management of online courses
    • The OCKS will produce 10 courses per year, developing 50 online courses over 5 years.
    • Total number of class hours acknowledged per course: approximately 30 hours
(12 hours of video lectures + 18 hours of supplementary classroom activities, such as student discussions, quizzes, and tests).
    • Courses will consist of various difficulty levels, including beginner, intermediate, and advanced.
    • The ratio of courses global to regional in scope will be at a 6:4 ratio.
    • The OCKS will offer courses in disciplines other than literature, language, and culture, but they will make up less than 30% of the total available courses.
    • Lectures will be delivered either Korean, English, or the lecturer's native language.
    • All the courses will have Korean, English, and Chinese subtitles as available options.
    • Courses will be uploaded to K-MOOC. (Courses will be available on the Integrated Computerized Platform Project for Korean Studies as well once the platform is launched).
  • Provision of guidebooks for each course
    • Each guidebook will follow the syllabus of the online course in question (distributed in either pdf text or e-book format).
    • The guidebooks will provide an introduction to the lecture’s goals and methodology, guidance on major learning points, and source texts along with interpretations of supplementary documents provided by the course.
  • Production of a source book in English
    • The OCKS will publish an English source book (anthology) to support lecturers and students utilizing the OCKS’s online courses.
    • This source book of primary sources and texts (supplemented by modern translations and detailed annotations) will act as a complementary self-study guide for students and as a source for overseas researchers.
  • Establishment and operation of the OCKS
    • The OCKS is established within Korea University.
    • For its first year, the OCKS will conduct assignments at the International Research Center for Korean Language and Culture of Korea University
  • Production of research monographs in Korean and English
    • The OCKS will publish one research monograph in Korean (through domestic publishers) and another in English (through foreign academic publishers). It will reflect the results of research from both abroad and in Korea.
    • The Korean monograph will examine the current status of Korean literature and cultural education abroad, while identifying steps for moving forward.
    • By introducing a wide-scope of research from both domestic and foreign scholars spanning across multiple generations, the English monograph will outline the developments of Korean Studies throughout history and present the discipline’s prospects for the future.
  • International Conferences
    • The OCKS will hold international conferences once a year (5 times in total).
    • Furthermore, a one-time conference is scheduled for the five-year research period so that teams can share their respective results in research and content production, while reviewing the years in hindsight.
